Case Study/Typical Installation

There are many ways to create the ambiance of a living flame effect fire where there is not a chimney.

  • Balanced Flue
  • Power Flue
  • Conventional Flue
  • Firebox for Open Fire

1. Balanced Flue [Glass-fronted fires]
These fires operate by putting flues on top of the appliance and can be vented horizontally or vertically. No Chimney Required [Some balanced flue models can be adapted to fit into existing chimneys]

2. Power Flue [Open Living Flame]
These fires have a combined flue and fire system which is operated by an electric fan. This makes a power flue fire very versatile and the ducting is easily concealed.

3. Conventional Flue [Glass-fronted & Open Living Flame fires]
The average house has a conventional flue, otherwise known as a chimney breast or a flat wall, with an opening in it approximately 20″w X 30″h [50cm X 75cm]. All standard fires can be installed within the prepared opening, subject to a smoke test.

4. Case Study
Our Case Study shows what is required to achieve an open gas/solid fuel fire in a house without a chimney. This is a very expensive process and is usually undertaken when an extra large or customised gas/solid fuel fire is requested.

Step 1

Picture shows a flat wall.

Step 2

A metal gatherbox is positioned to allow for flooring etc, flues are mounted to go vertically and horizontally, and their size will be relative to the size of the finished gas/solid fuel fire requirements. In certain cases, an electric fan (see our Accessories/Chimney solutions) can be incorporated where access/planning issues arise. When this work is completed and the Gas line is provided, metal studding is fixed around the gatherbox, and finished with fireproof plaster board[or Promoteck Board]

Step 3

To finish, a fireplace of choice cen be fixed to the wall and complimented with a beautiful gas fire. The installation is the same should a solid fuel fire be required except that the specifications for flueing would be different.
